Dominant 7th Chords

There is sometimes confusion about 7th chords. They are commonly used to give a sort of shifty transitional feeling. The dominant 7th is the lowered 7th scale degree of a major scale. The fancy lingo means, don't confuse them with a Major 7... That's a totally different animal.

Minor 7th chords are just minor chords with a lowered 7th. They sound saucy and latin, like Santana.

Major 7th Chords

Major 7th chords sound really different from dominant 7ths. The 7th scale degree is not lowered. Even though they are dissonant they have a kind of syrupy sweet poppy sound.
